Concert Pendant story

During his work in creating Concert, Jrn Utzon sought to develop a pendant with a pure and organic idiom of design. His idea was to use several different shades, and to strengthen the design further with upward illumination from the lamp. The chosen shade configuration is visually characteristic of Jrn Utzon and reminds us of his greatest work. Concert gives a pleasant, non-glaring light without compromising the strength of illumination. The pendant adds to ambient room lighting due to the light sent out between the shades.

Concert is built up of four shades and a parabola of drawn steel, which is mounted on a glass suspension of triple-layer, hand-blown opal glass. The suspension unit sends out a pleasant even light between the shades. At the same time, it illuminates the two upward shades and part of the cord. The bottom shade casts light downward to the parabola, which then diffuses it. The parabola not only softens the light, but prevents glare regardless of the height of the lamp.

The lamp is available in two different sizes, P1 and P3. The P1 has a diameter of 32cm with a cord of 3m, while the P3 has a diameter of 55cm and a cord of 6m.

Jrn Utzon

It is a matter of opening yourself to the essence of things, rather than struggling for form and style.

Thus sounds the primal theme of Denmarks probably most famous architect of all time: Jrn Utzon. His career culminated in 1957 when he won the international architectural competition for the Sydney Opera House. It is a thoroughly ingenious work that justifiably made him an icon of 20th Century architecture.

In developing his designs for Lightyears, Jrn Utzon has worked to ensure that light constantly promotes the atmosphere of a room, whether it is used for cosy togetherness, for a particular function or for sheer inspiration. The designs of his first lamp for Lightyears draw a golden thread from the Sydney Opera House. It completes the picture of Jrn Utzon as a lamp designer and architect of highest international stature.
