Exactly 50 years after the creation of the lamp, Lightyears has chosen to relaunch Orient in close collaboration with the Hammerborg family, heir to Jo Hammerborg’s design.

The organic mode of expression admirably combines the deep and vibrant brilliance of copper with its rosewood end. The dark grain of rosewood creates a natural connection with the tightly woven black textile cord.

The lamp has 24 narrow vertical slots at the top of the real copper shade that allow light to pass through. The luminaire elegantly conceals the low-energy light source and provides soft, pleasant light without glare.

The Lightyears Orient suspension is available in three versions: P1, P2 and P3.

– The Orient P1 lampshade is 24.5cm high and 22.5 cm in diameter.
– The Orient P2 is the medium version with a 37cm high and 34cm diameter lampshade.
– The Orient P3 is the largest version with a 54cm high and 50cm diameter lampshade.

Three colours are available:

– Aluminium and oak with a white interior and a grey cable.
– Black and rosewood with a black interior and a black cable.
– Copper and rosewood with a black interior and a black cable.

The P1 and P2 versions have a 3m textile cable and the P3 model has a 6m textile cable.

JoHammerborg

Johannes (Jo) Hammerborggrew up on the outskirts of Randers in a regular middle-class family. He trained as a silversmith, participated in Denmarks resistance and struggle for freedom in 1940-45 as a saboteur, studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and worked as a silversmith at Georg Jensen. In 1957, he was hired as chief designer at the lamp manufacturer Fog & Mrup, where he worked until 1980.

He was a pronounced idea person and entrepreneur, who throughout his entire life initiated and developed the things he was passionate about. He was a key driving force for Fog & Mrup, and it was under his leadership that the company experienced their most creative and commercially successful period.

With a distinct design philosophy, great insight in elimination technique and a profound understanding of form, function and aesthetics, he created over 180 different designs of lamps, several of which have received international awards. In 1980, Fog & Mrup underwent a series of mergers, and in the late 90s ceased production of his designs.

In his private life Jo Hammerborg was an active and very versatile athlete who, along with his professional career, was also a pioneer in parachuting and flying. In a tragic manner, it was his great passion for skydiving which cost him his life when, at the age of only 62, he died in an accident.

And now decades later, when his coveted lamps which are in high demand are being sold in antique shops, in 2013 it will again finally be possible to buy a newly manufactured, Jo Hammerborg lamp.

Lightyears has, in cooperation with the Hammerborg family, decided to relaunch the Orient pendants. Jo Hammerborgs innovative contributions to Danish lamp design have a natural place in the 21stcentury.
